The Brattleboro Winter Carnival, started in 1956, was and still is an occasion for family fun and entertainment at the height of the coldest part of winter. Since its inception, the carnival has provided a myriad of activities and has grown from a week to almost two full weeks of events. Some events have passed on, such as the formal dance, donkey basketball and others that were fun but insurance required restraint. Other events have stayed such as the Country Western Jamboree, storytelling, movies at the Latchis Theater and so many more.
One event that has stayed the course is the Queen's Pageant. When originated, the competition centered on good looks, popularity, and the most votes that could be bought. This event has been reined in and is now a scholarship competition promoting any course of higher education. Our younger girls participate in the Princess Pageant and gain stage presence and poise as young ladies.
The BWC committee, as always, is seeking interested people devoted to helping others enjoy a wonderful period in February when our children are on vacation and the whole family can partake in Family Day, Sugar on Snow, a Teen Dance and as always, a delightful variety show showcasing local talent. There are singers, bands, twirlers, and some great comedy supplied by the committee or our past presidents.
