Newfound Lake History

Long known as a destination for serenity and beauty,
Newfound Lake continues to be the ultimate location for
fun and relaxation. Its crystal clear spring-fed waters
and breath-taking views draw people for activities for
all seasons.

Newfound Lake is located in the lakes region of New Hampshire. There are four towns that share frontage – Alexandria, Bridgewater, Bristol and Hebron. At 4,106 acres, Newfound Lake is the fifth largest lake in New Hampshire (Winnipesaukee Lake 44,586 acres, Squam Lake 6,764 acres, Umbagog Lake 4,532 acres, Winnisquam Lake 4,264 acres, Newfound Lake 4,106 acres).

Some people say, Newfound Lake is one of the cleanest lakes in the world. The lake’s water is refreshed twice-over annually by underground springs. This pristine lake is 2 ˝ miles wide and seven miles in length. It is the deepest lake in New Hampshire – 182’ at a point east of the ledges on West Shore Road – ranking #1 in the state, .followed by Winnipesauke (180.1 feet).

Unlike the names of many other lakes and towns in New Hampshire, Newfound is not an Indian name. No one knows for sure when the lake was named Newfound, but one can surmise that it may have been early settlers, who had "newly found" the lake.

Wellington State Park, containing a large public beach, is located on the lake’s west shore in the town of Bristol.

Today, Newfound Lake has interests and activities for every age -- from swimming, sailing and water skiing to fishing and golf. In winter, people congregate to ice fish and ski the many mountains in the area and to enjoy the majesty of winter in the mountains.
